ISO 9000-2008

ISO 9000-2008 is an international standard published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) based in Geneva, Switzerland. It focuses on the quality of an organization's processes and systems. It is NOT a product quality standard. The ISO 9000-2008 standard is a revision of the 2000 edition and is principally an editorial clarification of the 2000 standard.

Click here to review the changes in the ISO 9000-2008 standard.

ISO publishes standards for business, government and society. It is made up of representatives from many countries that help develop and establish standards to provide a common basis of operation.

ISO 9000-2008 and its family of related documents is a quality management system standard. The key words there are "management system". The word "quality" should be thought of as an adjective. Similar to "good' or "excellent". In other words, "Good Management Systems".

ISO 9000 does not apply to the products and/or services an organization produces and sells. But, to the way the organization manages itself to produce and deliver its product and service.

What Is The Focus Of The ISO 9000 Program?

The ISO 9000 family of standards is focused on "quality management". This means what the organization does to fulfill:

  • the customer's quality requirements, and

  • applicable regulatory requirements, while aiming to

  • enhance customer satisfaction, and

  • achieve continual improvement of its performance in pursuit of these objectives.

ISO 9000 is not an actual standard with requirements. It is a description of what a fundamental quality management system is, as well as including the vocabulary used in the standard. Since it is an international standard, and words can have different connotations in different languages, it is necessary to define the words to have a common meaning.

The set of primary documents in the ISO 9000 family are:

ISO 9000-2008 Fundamental Quality Management System and Vocabulary,

ISO 9001:2008 Requirements for a Quality Management System, and

ISO 9004-2009 Managing for Sustained Success of an Organization

ISO 19011:2002 Principles for Auditing Quality and Environmental Management Systems

There are other related documents, but these are the ones most commonly used by companies.

There is additional information about all of the ISO 9000 documents on this web site. Choose a topic from the navigation menu over on the left side of the page.
